Selecting the right hotel when you want to stay fit is a tricky adventure. Hotel gyms look amazing, inspiring and above all, very clean and spacious. But having checked in, you sometimes find out that the actual ‘fitness studio’ is located in the basement, wedged somewhere between the boiler room and the staff elevator. These deserted bunkers are usually the last place anyone wants to exercise. Ever thought what happened if you get hurt or are feeling unwell? Luckily, sentiments are changing and more hotels invest in serious fitness facilities. It is not about having the biggest studio. Running your extra mile does feel easier when you look onto the city skyline from the top floor. Going anywhere this spring? Here are some of our favorites for 2018. Most of the clubs are also open to day guests.
1. Hong Kong, Langham Place
Step into the health club on the 41st floor and you’ll feel ‘king of the world’ even before working out. In fact some of the guests check in solely because of the outstanding spa and fitness facilities and the impressive view. From the airy modern cardio room you look out on a sea of neon and some fare away signs of humanity in the Mongkok district below-it’s the most densely populated place on earth. The excellent views of Victoria Harbor and Kowloon make Langham Place the ideal workout destination during Chinese New Year, when the city is ablaze with fireworks.
2. Las Vegas (US), The Venetian
Canyon Ranch is a famous name in healthy living, with its renowned health resorts in Arizona and Massachusetts. Their unique Canyon Ranch experience is also available in the Vegas’ Venetian hotel. Pick from hundreds of weight machines staggered across the fitness center. If you lack a little motivation, the hotel offers 50-minute personal training sessions, body composition analysis, basic fitness assessments, and customized workouts. And don’t forget to pack your climbing gear. Climbing is part of the unique fitness experience, thanks to the 40-foot rock climbing wall located inside the fitness center. Guests at the Venetian and the Palazzo usually have fitness access included in their room rate (be sure to check with the front desk) and non-guests can use the facilities for $40 per day.
3. Milan (Italy), Principe di Savoia
Located on the top floor of the hotel with a roof terrace overlooking the city, Club 10 Fitness and Beauty Center is the most exclusive health club in Milan. Guests can see the Pirelli Tower, the skyline of Milan, and snow-covered Italian Alps beyond. The hotel also boasts a full-size 1,600-square-foot pool. And if you’re lucky, you might bump into one of the famous soccer players (David Beckham came here frequently when he lived in Milano) or high rollers who catch some sun rays (in the nicer weather) at the solarium and heated swimming pool.
4. Chicago (US), Radisson Blu
Opened in 2012, one of Chicago’s newest hotels is located on the first 18 floors of the 81-story Aqua tower. What better way to describe this than as a fitness travelers’ dream thanks to a 8,000 square-foot gym along with a 25-meter indoor lap pool, hardwood basketball court, and a running trail in a beautiful, landscaped 80,000-square-foot modern lifestyle outdoor garden. The Radisson also keeps a handful of personal trainers on staff-just call ahead to make an appointment.
5. Los Angeles (US), The LA Athletic Club
From personal experience I can recommend this great combination of hotel and health club. The Los Angeles Athletic Club offers 72 guestrooms and one-bedroom suites that include a full American breakfast. Guests have access to the fitness club downstairs. Two indoor swimming pools, including a 25-yard lap pool with three lanes, anchor this world-class spa, and fitness center founded in 1880. The gym also offers a full-size basketball court, weights and rowing machines,
6. Marrakech (Morocco), La Mamounia
After a three-year, $176 million makeover, the Mamounia is reborn, more beautiful, more sumptuous, and more magical than ever before. Everyone from Winston Churchill to Franklin Roosevelt has come to admire the beauty of this Art Deco-meets-Imperial-Morocco hotel. Morocco’s most amazing hotel did not forget it heritage and invested in an amazing fitness facility, which is surrounded by the hotel’s 20 acres of gardens. In the heart of their ‘french’ gardens they have place the Fitness Pavilion where you can attend yoga, aerobics or Pilates. The electric blue walls evoke Yves St. Laurent’s famous Majorelle Gardens nearby. Of course you can opt for a swim in one of the heated swimming pools (no chloor, only ozon).
7. Bangkok (Thailand), Pathumwan Princess Hotel
This hotel is not on the typical ‘best hotel gym’ lists but I urge you to try this amazing hotel gym. The hotel is well known for its outstanding sport facilities since it is directly linked to the Olympic Club. Bangkok’s biggest and most dynamic fitness center boasts a massive 9,000 square meters with more than 100 different workout stations, a wide and varied range of exercise classes (try the authentic Muay Thai skills classes), rooftop tennis courts, squash courts, a badminton court, as well as jogging tracks, a basketball half-court, and a 25-meter saltwater swimming pool.
8. New York City (US), The Millennium UN Plaza Hotel
Well-appointed yet secluded, the Millennium Health and Racquet Club at ONE UN New York, formerly Millennium UN Plaza Hotel is a well-kept secret. Overlooking the United Nations building from the 27th floor, this health club, open to both hotel guests and the general public, takes in iconic views of the Empire State and Chrysler buildings, along with New York’s bridges, due to the floor-to-ceiling windows. Located on the 39th floor, the hotel even hosts a tennis court.
9. London (UK), Carlton Tower Hotel
Guests in this Knightsbridge hotel (just around the corner of Harrods) enjoy access to the exclusive Peak Health Club & Spa, featuring fully equipped gym, golf simulator, aerobics studio, sauna, steam room, and 20m heated indoor pool. Nine floors up, this fitness center and spa rubs shoulders with the luxury townhouses of Knightsbridge. Located between Hyde Park and Cadogan Gardens, the workout room’s south-facing windows overlook the upscale shopping district of Sloane Road and the rooftops of London. And being located close to the shopping area, you can always follow up a smooth spa treatment with some additional retail therapy. In addition, the Peak’s 20m indoor stainless steel swimming pool, located on the 2nd floor of the hotel, is the perfect place to reinvigorate your mind and body.
